  • Descrição: The second Sonata for flute and piano in three movements, commissioned by Alexa Still, could be described as a musical portrait of Venezuela.
It's the country I was born and raised in, and where I've lived most of my life, which makes it a self-portrait as well. The most striking trait of music in Venezuela is its intensity, the relentless drive of the descendants of Iberian fandangos; the Afro-Venezuelan drumming, the dances, the strumming, the chanting. Never a dull moment, never a stretch of time without a rhythmic articulation or a riff. Music is in the onomatopoeic talent of the spoken word in Venezuela. The first movement "Folies Venezueliennes" takes the Scarlattian language -some excerpts of which can sometimes be seamlessly mixed into traditional Venezuelan music- far beyond its simple tonal and structural grammar. The rhythmic derivations of the Fandango form a stream of variations, ending in a syncopated, multi- layered rendering of the Pajarillo, a Venezuelan classic. "El Alto" (meaning literally the halt, but also the high vantage point) dedicated to the memory of my friend the late Carlos Duarte, an exceptional pianist and composer from Caracas, is what we could call a study in "slow intensity". The leitmotiv of the open strings of the cuatro, the Venezuelan four stringed descendant of the renaissance guitar (A-D-F#-B) is the root of progressive meditations which all seem grounded in the simplicity of those intervals, the style of which is slightly reminiscent of Duarte's powerful, introspective piano music. The third movement. "La Gaviota" (the seagull) is based on an Afro-Venezuelan drumming genre from the central coast near Caracas. The Tambor de Caraballeda, is a powerful rhythm designed for antiphonal chanting and ritual dances on the central Caribbean coast. The piano plays the drum parts, both the high and low pitches of the deep skins and the wooden rim strikes. The flute does the chanting and the dancing on the relentless beat of the Tambora. The central section of the movement develops a stretto imitation texture based on the main motif of the Caraballeda style before ending in an exciting rush of riffs and runs.
