- Descrição: Pajarillo de la Culebra (1989), is the first movement of a Venezuelan Quintet for flute, oboe, violin, cello and cuatro, the strummed four- string guitar of the Orinoco basin, spanning Venezuela and Colombia. This is precisely the region in which the Pajarillo, a song and dance form, is a predominant musical expression. Basically it consists of a very short, 4-bar minor harmonic cycle related to the Spanish fandango; a structure fit for endless instrumental and vocal improvisation. This miniature pajarillo is like a brisk harmonic clash between two birds, far away, on the horizon of the boundless plains. After an encounter and a wild chase, the two instruments vanish in the distance. This pajarillo explores the dissonances contained in the harmonic cycle, as well as the rhythmic shifts of the genre. Both the harmonic wit and the rhythmic intensity add a great deal of spice to this miniature.
