"Haydn Tuyero, Chicharras, Galeones" (2000) This fantasy for flute, English horn evokes the musical past of the provinces near Caracas, in which coffee and sugar-cane were farmed in haciendas. South of the capital city lies the Tuy river valley. The harp music of this region is famous for its Spanish Baroque roots, and the remarkably complex oral traditions still alive there suggest that there was great musical talent and practice among the settlers. One can still listen to pieces on a metal-stringed harp that remind us of Spanish harpsichord music, extremely complex suites far more elaborate than any other harp music of the Hispanic Americas. This "musica ficta" fantasy surrounds a story I imagined with Francisco de Miranda (b. 1750) as the central figure. The forefather of Venezuelan Independence, who was also a good flutist and a charming casanovian character, made his Grand Tour of Europe with his flute, his unquenchable thirst for knowledge and his gallant modern ideas, this after meeting the founding fathers of the United States on the East coast. He knew everybody in that incredible period of revolutions, literally. In 1785 he had an encounter with Josef Haydn at Esterhazy, and during their stroll through the palace gardens they had long conversations on music, which he mentions in his diary. One can perhaps imagine Miranda asking Haydn to write something special for the flute. The fact is that their conversation was mostly about Boccherini, the famous Italian cellist that was stirring up musical life in Madrid, where Miranda had been living since he had settled there, coming from the colonies to study in the military academy; Miranda was probably updating Haydn about the musical life in the Iberian peninsula. After this meeting Miranda went off on his endless adventure, visiting Russia, meeting Catherine the Great, and later, during the French Revolution, becoming an important general of the French republican army. After this he conspired to free Venezuela from Spanish domination, and played a great part in the process that eventually succeeded in doing so. But in spite of his military life, he was passionate about music
